Former White Fern driving sport at Hornby High School By Georgia O’Connor-Harding A FORMER White Ferns cricketer is driving sports participation at Hornby High School. Katrina Keenan has been developing the school’s sporting scene for the past term in her new role as sports co-ordinator. Her first term in the role has been “busy” as she organised students to play volleyball, indoor football, touch and softball at after-school sports competitions. While Keenan has a strong background in cricket, she is focused on developing a broad spectrum of sports. “I am desperately trying to get a girls rugby team established . . . I want to get league established and a competition format available for
the boys,” she said. One of the highlights for Keenan so far was having the school’s junior and senior league nines’ teams come second and third respectively at the Canterbury schools tournament. As well as partaking in highperformance cricket, Keenan has played for the New Zealand indoor cricket team and also coached the White Ferns in 2013. “It is about retaining numbers and getting more coaches and officials involved so every sport has a great season of opportunity,” she said. While a competitive cricket team is yet to be established, Keenan said interest has been ignited with about 20 students turning up for Monday interval sessions.
Noise angers subdivision neighbours By Georgia O’Connor-Harding ONGOING developments in a long overdue subdivision in Yaldhurst are causing disruption for neighbouring residents. Heavy vehicles using residential street Jarnac Boulevard to access the Noble Village Subdivision are “non-stop,“ according to
nearby residents. Concern has been raised over the number of trucks using the street, which has both a childcare centre, Edukids Delamain, and a swimming school, Waitaha Aquatic Centre, nearby. The disruption surfaced after HEB Construction began work
on Yaldhurst Rd at the intersection of Sir John McKenzie Ave and on roading within the subdivision. The company is undertaking major works at the intersection, including removing non-operational traffic signals, installing turning bays and widening the
northern side of the road. New Zealand Transport Agency traffic and safety manager Tony Spowart said the intersection is still under construction and is not audited for safety. This means heavy vehicles cannot access the subdivision via Yaldhurst Rd and must instead
use Jarnac Boulevard. Resident Dee Swadi said the trucks are noisy and speed through the street “non-stop.” “I just think it is not a very good practise to put our safety at risk for a private development,” she said. •Turn to page 7

This is not the first time a funeral home has raised eyebrows this year. There was similar outcry when Lamb & Hayward applied for a resource consent in Halswell. Good on Katrina Keenan helping to get more students at Hornby High School involved in sport (front page). She is the new sport co-ordinator at the school and she is a former White Fern, so cricket is likely to be on the horizon. And it has been a week of festivity for the education sector (pages 5, 8 and 11). Funeral director defends facility By Georgia O’Connor-Harding THE MANAGING director behind a controversial application to open a funeral facility on a residential street has spoken out. Bell, Lamb and Trotter Funeral Directors have lodged a non-notified application to open a funeral satellite office at 1 Rochdale St. Andrew The home-based Bell funeral facility in Fendalton has drawn opposition from nearby residents, including dermatologist David Nicholls and the adjacent Christchurch Boys’ High School. But managing director Andrew Bell said he wants to establish a more “homely environment” for people who feel apprehensive at funeral homes. “Have you ever seen a funeral service where there are two or three people at it? It is possibly the most heart-breaking thing you will ever see in a chapel built for 200 people,” he said. Mr Bell said he wants to set the facility up at his own twostorey home for people who want to spend time with their loved ones in a more “homely environment.”

“Not everyone feels comfortable having them (the deceased) in their own home,” he said. Twenty-six services are to be held at the house each year with a maximum of two per week. The services would be limited to 10 people on site, along with two staff members, and would take up to two hours. The facility would operate between 9am and 8pm, Monday
to Friday, and 9am to 7pm at weekends. Funeral services would be limited from 10am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. It is proposed up to six people can attend the viewing of the deceased at a time. The application said the deceased would not be held at the home overnight and would be transported back to the business’ mortuary at Ferry Rd.
Christchurch Boys’ High School headmaster Nic Hill said the school’s main concern was over the commercial impact the facility could have on traffic and parking in the Straven Rd area. “It is awfully congested and there are definitely hazardous intersections . . . it is a busy cycle thoroughfare going onto Straven Rd,” he said. In the application, a report from Abley Transportation Consultants said the site provides four parking spaces to accommodate typical parking demand. It was initially decided for the application to be non-notified in February after independent commissioner Philip Milne resolved the proposed activity was a “home occupation.” However, after the city council received informal complaints from residents on the street, the application was once again put to Mr Milne to make a final decision. In Brief TREE REMOVAL DEBATE The Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board will look at whether to remove a silver birch tree located outside 50 Brigham Dr in Halswell. Residents would like to see the tree removed because it shades the street light and leaf debris are a nuisance. Residents were consulted over the tree removal. Out of the four residents who responded, two were in support of the removal and two were against. City council staff recommend the request to remove the tree, made by resident Dave Matheson, is declined. A decision will be made at the board’s meeting today. SPECIAL MEETING The Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board will hold a submissions committee meeting tomorrow to draft its submission for the city council’s draft Annual Plan. RUAPUNA LEASE DECISION The city council will look to green-light a recommendation from the Halswell-HornbyRiccarton Community Board for it to publicly advertise a proposal to renew the Canterbury Car Club’s lease for part of Ruapuna Park. The club’s existing lease, which covers Ruapuna’s racetrack, expired in December.

Police call for loitering bylaw Riccarton Community Constable Aaron Thorn writes about why he would like to see a loitering bylaw put in place on Division St near Riccarton Rd I have been a community liaison officer for the Riccarton area over the past two years and since the opening of the Riccarton bus exchange in December 2015 there has been a surge of youth offending. This offending mainly occurs on Division St between the entrance to Westfield Riccarton and Riccarton Rd. I conduct daily patrols in the Riccarton area mainly concentrating on the area of Riccarton Rd between Clarence St and Matipo St and the surrounds of Westfield Riccarton. Offending consists of disorderly behaviour, intimidation, threatening behaviour, assault and wilful damage including graffiti, drug/alcohol abuse and shoplifting/theft. There has been a significant increase in bike theft in the area too. There is frustration from retailers, shoppers and those waiting to catch the bus. This frustration is felt deeply by myself and other

police officers who have to deal with calls in the area. Police have limited powers of dealing with these youths unless they are caught offending and causing problems. Unfortunately, two businesses have had enough and have decided to leave the area. I made a suggestion to introduce a “no loitering bylaw” on Division St near Riccarton Rd. This was warmly received by the city council in a recent meeting. Generally when youths congregate on Division St, at times they create anti-social behaviour by blocking walkways, spitting and swearing loudly, loiter near business entry doorways, being abusive towards retailers who ask them to move on and intimidate other members of the public who wish to either walk towards the

for three months, then this group is it. Teach them respect, goal-setting and direction. Get authority from their parents to do so and round them up. Cheryl Hanham – Yes it should be introduced and I liked the idea of having demerit points for problem youths. If they get a set number, send them into army boot camp for four weeks. Needs to be at least four to six weeks, time to put new thoughts into place. Sally King – Yes, but only if they are going to put in tougher penalties for youth who are offending or being nuisance, otherwise all they are doing is shifting the problem somewhere else. We need better policing in the area too. Cops back on the beat, maybe. We should be increasing police presence not decreasing with cutbacks.

But, the playground is there and I would feel extremely uncomfortable knowing that there is a pub right next to where my children play. So good idea for a community but not next to the playground please. Also, there is not enough parking for a pub to be in that centre. If people were going over the limit and having to taxi home they would be leaving their cars overnight causing a parking nightmare.

Rare Vincentian Cross medal Noise frustrates subdivision neighbours for parish’s good Samaritan
By Sarla Donovan BEING GIVEN the rare Vincentian Cross was an experience “quite out of this world” for Russell McKee. The 86-year-old was awarded the medal by the president of the Society of St Vincent de Paul, Renato Lima de Oliveria, for his 56 years of membership and service. Mr McKee’s voluntary work with St Vincent de Paul began in 1961 when the parish priest at St Joseph’s church, Papanui, asked for his assistance in helping the poor and needy. “There were lots of local people who couldn’t manage, lots of poor people around. Usually the money was going on booze or gambling,” said Mr McKee The priest gave him a list of regular clients to visit. “We would take food, or clothing, or school uniforms, whatever the need was.” He still drives around each week to visit clients in need of help. “People are poor managers,” he said. Mr McKee said he had never expected such an award. He was motivated by a desire to help

those less fortunate than him. “Those who have been given many gifts have an obligation to share.” His wife of 60 years, Janette, is also a volunteer with St Vincent de Paul. The two met through their involvement with Catholic tennis and youth clubs before
marrying at St Mary’s church in Manchester St on April 22, 1957. With their diamond wedding anniversary approaching later this month, plans are afoot for a party to mark the occasion. “My dear wife is organising a social at the RSA in Papanui. It’s a busy time.”

He said it is the safest access to the site. “It is not safe for us to continually have our operators entering and exiting onto such a busy road . . . under traffic management rules we are not allowed to enter or exit across Yaldhurst Rd during peak traffic flows,” he said. Nearly 24,000 vehicles use Yaldhurst Rd daily. HEB Construction is also in the process of maintaining the roads within the subdivision to meet the city council’s infrastructure design standards. manager Jodie Goodmanson said the pre-school had not noticed an increase in trucks around the area. Waitaha Aquatic Centre director Huia Mihara said he was more concerned by the speed quarry trucks travel at up the adjacent Buchanans Rd. The 33ha subdivision has been years in the making and was purchased by Infinity Investment Group Holdings Limited last year. Big turnout for childhood centre opening By Georgia O’Connor-Harding THE FIRST Pasifika early childhood centre in the South Island has opened in Hornby. Barnardos Kidstart Hornby Pasifika Early Learning Centre celebrated its opening last Friday. More than 200 people attended the event including MP for Wigram Megan Woods, National candidate for Wigram David Hiatt and city councillor Anne Galloway. The day opened with a Cook Islands drum performance and featured a kapa haka performance from Hornby Primary School. Performances were also made by Kidsfirst Niu Early Learning Centre and kai/kana performances from Hornby Primary and Hornby High School Pasifika groups. “One of the beautiful stories with this centre is it came out of all that pain in terms of Branston Intermediate closing,” Dr Woods said. Branston Intermediate closed in 2013. She said the opening was a fantastic day and it was a privilege to congratulate the community on their achievement. Barnardos Kidstart brand manager Alicia Lonergan said the early learning centre had been years in the making with the needs of the Pasifika community in mind. While the centre will adhere to
the New Zealand education curriculum, the learning programme will support Pasifika culture and identity. Teachers come from diverse backgrounds including Cook Islands, Samoan, Tongan and Maori and can all speak their native tongue. The centre located on site at Hornby Primary School will accommodate up to 50 children under the age of five-years-old with more than 15 families are already enrolled. Post-earthquake, the Ministry of Education and the city’s Pasifika Advisory Board recognised Hornby as an area with rapid growth in population. Maori and Pasifika contribute to 63 per cent of the national enrolment growth for the early learning centre sector since 2013. The project was supported by organisations in the community including Te Taumutu Rūnanga, Hornby Heartlands and CORE Education. It was jointly funded by Barnardos Kidstart and the Ministry of Education. Ara Institute of Canterbury students contributed to the development building planting boxes for the children to grow vegetables and fruit.

Teaching Conference gives students focused insights into world issues on ‘Learn Create Share’

Six Hornby High School students attended the World Vision Youth Conference held recently. Students Anaru Jackson, Spencer Drummond, Rosa Cameron, Crystal Edminstin, Montana Jamieson and Shvoune Jefferies were accompanied by Mr Ben Carter. The day-long conference is designed to equip students with the leadership tools they need to create change both locally and globally. Comments from the students following the event included: “No matter what age or what race you are you can make a change to the world, make it a better place and lead by example,” – Montana; “Because of their unique way of presenting, it opened your mind to the fact that you got emotionally attached but then brought it back to you that we needed to do something to help,” – Anaru; “It made me stop and think how lucky we are to have what we have and the school we go to because in Syria they don’t even have schools,” – Shvoune; “The biggest thing for me was learning about Syria and just how people live over there and just what they have been

BEING HEALTHY: Kidsfirst Templeton has won a Heart Foundation award for an event they held in February.
Award for Heart Day KIDSFIRST TEMPLETON has scooped the overall South Island award in the Heart Foundation awards for a ‘Heart Day’ event it held in February. THe awards recognise early childhood services that promote healthy food choices and encourage physical activity in centres, at home and the wider community. THe foundation has encouraged early childhood
education centres to hold Heart Day events to encourage what it means for people to look after their heart. Kidsfirst head teacher Trish Ralston said coming together as a kindergarten family and community was the inspiration for holding the Heart Day picnic at their local park. “We dressed in red and walked down to the domain where we
shared a healthy picnic. We all had lots of fun together with egg and spoon races, three-legged races, sack races and parachute games,” she said. “To keep our heart rates pumping we also played our favourite kindy games of duck, duck, goose and honey hunt.” Parents and family also donated money on the day, which was passed on to the foundation for its annual appeal.
A SCHOOL providing education for students with underlying intellectual impairment have celebrated the opening of their brand new residential facilities. Halswell Residential College celebrated the opening of their $9 million family-style residential houses and multi-purpose learning spaces on Thursday. Earthquake strengthening of the main school buildings have been completed along with the demolition of old villas. Associate education minister Nikki Kaye joined the school community to celebrate the opening. Principal Janine Harrington
said the upgrade was focused on providing quality residential facilities for up to 32 students. “We are delighted with the residential accommodation and the multi-purpose learning environment . . . this is especially important as we operate as a 24/7 school where living is learning,” she said. Work will now continue on the rebuild of the short-stay accommodation for students’ families along with the conference area. The school’s board chairman Dave Turnball said the opening is an exciting acknowledgement of everyone’s collaborative efforts.

Jaidyn goes in the shot put record book CHRISTCHURCH GIRLS’ student Jaidyn Busch etched her name in the record books with a huge shot put throw at the secondary schools athletics championships in Dunedin.
Busch threw a distance of 14.77m in the under-16 event smashing the previous record of 12.92m. The previous record was set in 2013. Last month she also beat her school’s record of 11.17m – which had stood since 2003 – with a throw of 12.32m.
By Andrew King VILLA MARIA have backed up their national success in the under-19 4x400m relay, equalling a record at the secondary schools athletics championships in Dunedin. Tegan Duffy, 17, Georgia Stroud, 16, Olivia Burnham, 15, and Kate Davies, 14, ran a 4min 00.14sec time, equalling the record set by Dunedin’s Columba College in 2015. Burnham ran the final leg and said she knew when she crossed the line that it was a quick time. “I didn’t think it was a record. I was in total amazement, it was pretty awesome,” she said. Davies is a new addition to the team. The others have been together for the past three years and, with former student Jessie Anderson, they set the national record in the under-19 4x400m last year in Auckland, finishing in 4min 1sec. They are also the Canterbury secondary schools grass recordholders. Davies said it was intimidating to come into a team that had so much success, but she was excited by the opportunity. PEARS WITH PORK CHOPS AND OLIVES Ingredients 2 Tbsp Olive oil 4 Pork chops, fat removed 1 Onion, chopped 2 cloves Garlic, crushed 250g Small potatoes, sliced 2 Pears, peeled and cored ½ Lemon, juiced 100g Butter beans, cooked 2 stalks Thyme ½ cup Green olives 100ml Cream 1 handful Fresh parsley, and thyme to garnish
Seasoning ½ cup Microgreens 2 Tbsp Fresh mint, chopped Directions
Directions Preheat oven to 170 deg C. Heat one Tbsp oil in a frying pan. Brown pork chops on both sides. Set aside. Add onion and garlic to pan and brown for three or four minutes. Add remaining oil along with potatoes and toss until lightly browned. Toss pears in lemon juice. Into an oven proof dish, place potatoes, beans, pears, thyme, olives and pork chops.
Deglaze pan with cream then pour over pork. Cover with tinfoil. Place in oven and bake for 30 minutes, then remove tinfoil and bake for a further 30 minutes. Serve garnished with parsley and thyme.
ROASTED CARROT AND PUMPKIN WITH TAHINI YOGHURT DRESSING Ingredients 4 Carrots, peeled and sliced into batons
¼ Pumpkin, peeled and sliced 1 Olive oil 1 tsp Moroccan seasoning, or sumac, a powder made from Middle Eastern berries Tahini-yoghurt dressing 5 Tbsp Tahini paste
Preheat the oven to 220 deg C. Toss the vegetables in olive oil and scatter over a baking dish. Season with Moroccan spice mix or sumac, and salt and pepper to taste. Roast for 25 to 30 minutes. Check to ensure the vegetables are tender. Place the hot vegetables on a large platter. Allow to cool to room temperature while you make the tahini-yoghurt dressing by combining all the ingredients together and season with salt and pepper. Then drizzle the dressing over the vegetables, season with salt and pepper and top with microgreens and mint. Serve.

Joint pain: Do I have arthritis or could it be mainly my muscles? The team at Physical Sense in Sydenham sees clients with a range of symptoms but many of their middle-aged and senior clients visit complaining of pain in one of their joints. PhysiotheraPist ietje van stolk suggests that a major part of the pain could be due to muscle pain rather than simply arthritis. “even if an x-ray shows arthritis, the reason for the pain may be the muscles around the joint,” she explains. The images show how a muscle knot (the crosses) in a back muscle can give hip pain (aches and pain are the red areas in the drawings), a knot in a muscle on the back of the shoulder blade can give a deep pain in the front of the shoulder and a muscle knot all the way near the groin can give an ache in the knee (especially at night in bed). ietje recalls one case where an 89 year old client with severe arthritis who walked with a stick, told her, “i will end up in a wheelchair, i cannot put any weight through my right leg due to pain in my hip and buttock”. “Within 4 treatments, she was walking with her stick but without the severe pain,” says ietje. “The arthritis was one of the factors that made her muscles spasm but
the other was that older people move less and the flexed position the hip is in when we sit is particularly bad for the hip.” ietje is happy with the fact that although the client was 89 and could have been “given up on” or told to live with the pain, she made a difference to her health and wellbeing. The same lack of movement can be the reason for your knee pain or your shoulder pain and the same few treatments could make a huge difference for you. at Physical sense, hands-on techniques (massage and triggerpoint deactivation techniques) are used to release the muscles. The client also gets a home exercise program designed to mobilize and stretch the joint, strengthen the important core muscles and increase general strength and balance. They teach a movement sequence that stretches the joint in all directions whilst the client is able to lie safely on their bed, perfect for older or

less mobile clients. in many cases having the muscles released and being taught how to maintain it, is enough to stay on top of the problem. if severe arthritis is the underlying cause, some maintenance therapy may be necessary, but that is often more affordable and, for older patients, better tolerated than surgery. in very few treatments the client will know

THE Christchurch branch StarJam is gearing up for another exciting concert taking place on Easter Saturday at e Piano. StarJam is an award winning non-profit national organisation that empowers youth with disabilities through music and performance workshops. One in five New Zealanders is living with a disability. at means approximately 150,000 young people with disabilities are facing considerable barriers in their lives. StarJam believes this is something that can be changed. rough music and performance workshops, StarJam reaches many of these young New Zealanders and provides opportunities for them to explore their talents, gain new skills and build confidence to try new things. For many, StarJam has been a life-transforming experience.
